Mary Poppins

Even though 'Matisse: Drawing life' is an amazing exclusive to Brisbane exhibition that is not to be missed, there is so much more on offer at QAG and GoMA than just art exhibitions. The Gallery's Australian Cinematheque is the only one of its kind in an Australian art museum, and regularly presents retrospective and thematic film programs and exhibitions, featuring the work of influential filmmakers and artists.
Starting early January, The Gallery's Australian Cinematheque presents films exploring the crossover between the drawn narrative and its adaptation to animation and live action films. From classic comic serials to graphic novels, the program brings together over 60 films from around the world that chart the shift from printed page to screen and the way comic genres and themes challenge personal and cultural expectations. From morally complex superheroes through to satirical reflections of the mundane, these films capture our imagination, engage our empathy and prick our social conscience.
Some of the great films being screened are Sin City, The Crow, The Maxx, The Dark Knight, X2: X-Men United, Footrot Flats, Mirrormask, and plenty more that are sure to appeal to the comic book lover, the cartoon addict, or the superhero wannabe.
'DRAWN TO SCREEN: Graphic novels, comics and serials' tickets are available through advance purchase at qtix.com.au and is a great activity for all ages these holidays.

After 277 episodes and more than 150 guests, Adam, Alan and Myf decided to call it a day and draw the curtain on seven years of Spicks and Specks on ABC-TV.
For those who aren't familiar with the show, two teams go head to head as they sing, shout and delve deep into the recesses of their collective minds to help earn their team an extremely inglorious victory. Whether discussing the lyrical genius of Gilbert and Sullivan, the reasons Ozzy Osbourne wore a dress or just how a musician can choke on a harmonica, no musical genre is overlooked… well, except for maybe Swedish folk music, but hey, we’ve all got limits. Video clips, album covers, and information you never thought anyone could know the answer to, Spicks and Specks enlightens and entertains - and exposes the world of music like never before.
Now in homage to Whispering Jack himself, they are heading out on the road to say good bye for the first time (and actually the last time). Spicks and Speck-tacular – The Finale is a brand new production, loosely based on a certain music trivia show, putting Adam, Alan and Myf back on stage together with surprises, laughs, memories, live music and appalling choreography.. They're playing Monday 28th November - Friday 2nd December in Brisbane at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The first ‘tacular’ was a ridiculously entertaining smash hit. The Finale is heading off to top the first tour with an homage to stadium rock that will almost certainly involve pyrotechnics and a trip to Europe (the band not the continent).

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.
On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts.
Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.
At the end of the month, Mo Bros and their female supporters (known as Mo Sistas) celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

Following Novotel Brisbane's $12 million dollar refurbishment and relaunch, the hotel is holding their inaugural Melbourne Cup event. The event is being exclusively sponsored by G.H Mumm Champagne and will feature an enclosure where guests will have the opportunity to open their own bottle of Champagne...with a sabre!
Sabrage is a technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre, used for ceremonial occasions and was invented in the early 1800's by Napoleon's cavalry to celebrate victory in the battlefield of France and Europe. The sabre is slid along the body of the bottle toward the neck. The force of the blade hitting the lip breaks the glass to separate the collar from the neck of the bottle.
Novotel's Melbourne Cup event also includes a 3 hour beverage package, carnival style entertainment including fashion's off the field and the sabrage display, fabulous prizes, race day canapes with a modern twist, and live coverage of the race on multiple big screens.

On 30th November, Elton John is coming to town!
On this, his 15th tour of Australia, Elton John & His Band will begin the national run of dates on Wednesday 30th November at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre before heading south to the iconic Hunter Valley for a performance under the stars at Hope Estate on Saturday 3rd December in this his only appearance in NSW on the tour. The show then rolls south to Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday 6th December, then onwards to Adelaide for A Night At Coopers Amphitheatre at the Coopers Brewery on Friday 9th December before closing the tour in Perth at Burswood Dome on Sunday 11th December.
To draw comparisons to Sir Elton John is impossible; artist, altruistic philanthropist, Grammy, Oscar, Tony and BRIT winner, his many accolades have made him an inimitable force in a career spanning five decades, with his versatility and effortless talent showing no sign of slowing down.
Acclaimed as one of the world's greatest living pop icons, Elton's audience has seen him traverse a career that began in the 1960s when he was a shy singer/songwriter and saw him grow into one of the most successful musicians of all time. His crossovers from classic balladry, soul and disco to country, gospel and rock have often confounded but never disappointed his legion of worldwide fans. As one of the greatest showmen of all time, his spectacular stage shows continue to leave the competition standing still in his wake.
The Brisbane International Film Festival is Queensland's premier film event, and has evolved over the course of two decades to become a part of the cultural fabric of the city, as well as an annual highlight of the Brisbane social calendar.
This year we celebrate the festival's 20th anniversary. It's a vastly different physical and cultural landscape in Brisbane today from the one twenty years ago, when Baz Luhrmann's Strictily Ballroom opened the first ever BIFF.
With over 100 films screening, there truly is something for everyone, so grab a friend and take some time out to be reminded once more of the magic of cinema. While you're at it, why not make a night of it and treat yourself to a night at the Novotel Brisbane? It's centrally located and is looking spectacular after a $12 million dollar refurbishment.
